Where to Park in DC on Sunday: Free Street Parking, Meters, Museums, and Events

Last reviewed: July 21, 2026. This is practical visitor guidance, not legal advice. Always read the exact parking signs where you leave the car.

Quick answer: Sunday parking in DC is often easier than weekday parking, but it is not automatically free everywhere. Check the sign, the meter or ParkMobile zone, event restrictions, temporary no-parking signs, residential zone language, and whether you are near the National Mall or a major venue.

If you are asking because you are visiting museums, monuments, brunch, a game, or a hotel, the safest strategy is usually: check legal street parking first, have a garage or Metro backup, and do not assume “Sunday” cancels every rule.

Is Street Parking Free in DC on Sunday?

Sometimes. Many DC street parking signs list enforcement days and hours. If Sunday is not listed, that specific restriction may not apply on Sunday. But you still need to read the whole sign stack because another rule may apply.

For example, a block can have one sign for residential permit parking, another sign for street sweeping, another for rush-hour tow-away rules, and temporary signs for construction, moving trucks, races, parades, or special events.

Sunday Parking Checklist

Question Why it matters
Does the sign list Sunday? If Sunday is listed, the restriction may still apply.
Is there a meter or ParkMobile zone? Check the meter hours and time limit before assuming payment is not needed.
Is this a residential zone? A visitor may still be limited if the posted rule includes Sunday or if another restriction applies.
Are there temporary signs? Temporary emergency no-parking signs can override the normal pattern.
Are you near an event? Arena, stadium, Wharf, Mall, parade, and road-closure rules can change the normal Sunday parking situation.

Sunday Parking Near the National Mall

For a Sunday museum or monument trip, the National Mall is usually where visitors most want free parking. But it is also where demand can be highest.

The National Park Service says visitor parking around the National Mall includes both metered and free options. NPS lists on-street parking areas including Constitution Avenue NW between 15th Street NW and 23rd Street NW, Independence Avenue SW between 15th Street and Maine Avenue, Jefferson Drive SW, Madison Drive NW, Parkway Drive NW, West Basin Drive SW, and Ohio Drive at East and West Potomac Parks.

NPS also says there are more than 1,400 metered parking spaces in the National Mall area. Those meters are listed as operating daily from 7 AM to 8 PM, including weekends and holidays except December 25, at $2.30 per hour, with a maximum duration of 3 hours in many areas. Hains Point in East Potomac Park is listed by NPS as having about 520 free parking spaces.

Best Sunday Strategy by Trip Type

Trip Best first move Backup
National Mall museums Check Mall/NPS street parking early; read meter limits carefully. L'Enfant Plaza, Federal Triangle, Penn Quarter, or Metro.
Brunch or neighborhood visit Look for legal residential or metered street parking where Sunday is not listed. Nearby paid garage if the sign stack is confusing.
Capital One Arena / Penn Quarter Pre-check garages; Sunday event demand can erase easy street parking. Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro or a garage reserved in advance.
Nationals Park or Audi Field Assume event restrictions and heavy demand near the venue. Metro, official/event lots, or a garage farther from the stadium.
Hotel stay with a car Compare hotel parking fee before booking. Stay near Metro with cheaper parking, or use a nearby garage.

Metro Parking on Sundays

Metro parking can be a good Sunday backup if you do not need the car inside DC. WMATA says Metro-operated parking is free on weekends and federal holidays for Metro riders, except during special events. WMATA also says it operates parking facilities at 51 Metrorail stations.

This is especially useful if you are driving from outside DC and visiting the Mall, downtown, or an event. The tradeoff is time: you save parking stress, but you need to account for train frequency, walking distance, and whether the station is convenient for your route home.

Sunday Does Not Cancel These Parking Rules

  • temporary emergency no-parking signs;
  • hydrants, curb cuts, crosswalks, alleys, driveways, and bus stops;
  • loading zones if the sign includes Sunday or if the space is otherwise restricted;
  • special event restrictions;
  • private garage and hotel parking fees;
  • National Mall meter rules where posted; and
  • any sign that specifically lists Sunday enforcement.

If You Get a Sunday Parking Ticket

Do not assume the ticket is wrong just because it was Sunday. Check the violation code and compare it with the exact sign. A Sunday meter/payment issue is different from a temporary no-parking violation, rush-hour tow-away rule, loading zone, or residential permit issue.

Bottom line: Sunday parking in DC can be easier and sometimes free, but the sign still wins. For visitors, the best Sunday parking plan is to check the exact block, know the next restriction time, and have a garage or Metro backup before the easy spaces disappear.
